Food Additives and the Skin: The UK Hub

Short answer. For a subset of people with reactive skin, specific food additives can trigger or worsen hives, itching, eczema and flushing. The additives with the strongest published links are the azo colours (tartrazine, sunset yellow, allura red), the benzoate preservatives (E210 to E219), sulphites (E220 to E228), MSG (E621), and the salicylates and histamines that occur both as additives and naturally in many foods. Why food shows up on the skin at all
Skin is not a sealed bag. Everything you eat is broken down into molecules that circulate in your blood and reach every tissue, including the skin. Some people’s immune and mast cell systems are more reactive to certain of those molecules, and the skin is often the first place that shows it - because the mast cells that release histamine sit densely in the skin and the reaction is visible.
The published data is not evenly strong across additives. Some links are well established (sulphites and hives; azo colours and childhood eczema; MSG and flushing in a small subset). Others are individual and only prove themselves with a structured elimination and reintroduction. This hub explains what is known and where the honest uncertainty is.
The additives most linked to skin symptoms in UK research
Azo colours (the Southampton six). Tartrazine (E102), quinoline yellow (E104), sunset yellow (E110), carmoisine (E122), ponceau 4R (E124), and allura red (E129). The Southampton study led directly to the UK/EU warning label on foods containing these (“may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children”). Linked in multiple dermatology reviews to eczema flares and hives in sensitive children.

Non-azo colours. Erythrosine (E127), brilliant blue (E133), patent blue V (E131), and the natural colours annatto (E160b) and carmine/cochineal (E120). Carmine is worth flagging - it is derived from insects and can cause immediate allergic reactions in some people, not just intolerance.
Preservatives. Sodium benzoate (E211) and the wider benzoate family are the classic urticaria trigger. Sulphites (E220 to E228) are the wine and dried fruit sensitivity - flushing, hives, sometimes wheeze in asthmatics. Sodium nitrite (E250) in cured meats triggers histamine-type symptoms in some. Potassium sorbate (E202) and calcium propionate (E282) are worth knowing in bakery and cheese products.
Antioxidants. BHA and BHT - synthetic antioxidants used in fats and oils. They also appear in cosmetics, which is one of the many places food and skin overlap.
Flavour enhancers. Monosodium glutamate (E621) - flushing, sweating and headache in a small subset within an hour of eating. Not an allergy; a pharmacological effect.
The naturally-occurring drivers (no E-number, still relevant)
Two categories drive a big share of “food seems to affect my skin” cases and neither is an additive.
- Salicylates - naturally in many fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs. Roughly half of atopic dermatitis patients in one published meta-analysis show sensitivity. See our salicylate sensitivity and skin guide.

The published evidence, honestly summarised
The strongest evidence for a food-skin link exists in chronic urticaria (long-running hives). A frequently cited PMC review of chronic urticaria patients found that a structured pseudo-allergen-low diet reduced symptoms in roughly a third of patients, with benzoates, azo dyes, and salicylates as the most common individual triggers. For eczema (atopic dermatitis), the evidence is weaker but real for a subset. Some published paediatric cohorts have shown reductions in eczema severity when the Southampton six colours are excluded. It does not work for everyone.
For flushing and rosacea, sulphites, nitrites and MSG are the additives most commonly named by patients and dermatologists, with alcohol (usually from red wine) sitting alongside them.
For contact dermatitis (rashes from what touches the skin), the food link is smaller but not zero - balsam of Peru cross-reacting foods is the best-known example.
The UK regulatory picture (short version)
- All additives sold in food in the UK must be approved and appear with either their full name or their E-number.
- The Southampton six colours must carry the “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children” warning on any food they appear in.
- Sulphites above 10 mg/kg must be declared, and are one of the 14 UK major food allergens.
- Precautionary allergen labelling (“may contain”) does not extend to additive sensitivities - if you react to benzoates or MSG, you are relying on the ingredients list and cannot fall back on a warning line.
The regulator is the Food Standards Agency; additive approvals are held in the UK-retained EU register.
How to work out if additives are affecting your skin
The honest answer: keep it structured. A short list of steps that avoids common mistakes.
- Log two weeks of ordinary eating with the skin diary. Do not change anything yet.
- Look for patterns. The classic ones are hives in the evening after a colourful lunch, flushing after wine, eczema flares after processed food weeks.
- Pick one category to trial based on the patterns - most often either the Southampton six colours or the benzoate family.
- Exclude for four weeks and log. Improvement is meaningful when it is consistent, not one good day.
- Reintroduce deliberately with one exposure, not by “going back to normal”. A reproducible flare on reintroduction is your evidence.
- Get a dietitian involved if the shortlist grows past two categories or if a child is involved. Blanket additive avoidance is not safe for children long term.

Common questions
Are food additives really linked to skin problems?
For a subset of people, yes. Published UK/European research including the Southampton study on colours and hyperactivity, and multiple dermatology reviews of chronic urticaria, has found consistent links between specific additives (colours, benzoates, sulphites, salicylates) and skin symptoms in sensitive individuals. The population effect is small, but the individual effect can be large and reversible with avoidance.
Are E-numbers banned in the UK?
No. E-numbers are approved additives with a European safety code - the E just means the substance passed EU (and now UK-retained) safety review. Some (like the six Southampton colours) require a warning label about possible effects on activity and attention in children, but they are legally sold. UK legislation for food additive labelling is on the Food Standards Agency site at food.gov.uk.
Should I go additive-free to fix my eczema?
No, not as a first step. Elimination diets are useful for identifying specific triggers but should be structured and time-limited, ideally under a dietitian. Blanket avoidance of everything with an E-number is unnecessary for most people, hard to sustain, and can lead to a poorer diet. Start by learning the additives most linked to your specific symptom, then decide with a professional whether a trial exclusion is worth doing.
Do 'natural' foods cause the same reactions?
Yes, in some people. Salicylates and histamine are two of the biggest food-and-skin drivers and are naturally present in many fruits, vegetables, and fermented foods - completely unregulated and E-number-free.
