Eczema-Safe Baby Products: A Gentle Buyer's Guide for Parents
Choosing wash, cream and wipes for a baby with eczema. The criteria that matter, what to avoid, and how to check any product quickly.
What to prioritise
For eczema-prone baby skin, the winners are almost always simple, fragrance-free and barrier-supporting. The category matters less than the label.
What to look for
- Emollients (moisturisers): plain, fragrance-free, applied generously and often.
- Washes: fragrance-free, or just water for very young babies; short, lukewarm baths.
- Wipes: fragrance-free and ideally free of methylisothiazolinone (MI); or use cotton wool and water.
- Detergent: a fragrance-free, non-bio option for clothing and bedding.
What to avoid
Fragrance and “unscented” with masking scent, bubble baths, essential oils, and wipes preserved with MI.
Check it against your triggers
To check a product, a free browser extension like Clearya flags ingredients of concern automatically as you shop online. That tells you what is in a product, but it rates it on general criteria rather than against your own list.
Once you know what you are screening for, a personal-list app like ClearaScan lets you save the ingredients you react to once and scan any product to flag only your triggers. It also keeps a Reaction Journal for flare-ups, a shared Care Circle so family or carers can scan for you, and a Trusted Products list for items you have cleared, and it is currently in early access. (Disclosure: our editor co-founded ClearaScan, and we are not paid to mention the others.)
