I Reacted to a New Product - How to Find the Likely Culprit
A calm, step-by-step decision guide to working out what in a new skincare or household product made your skin react. Product-neutral, UK-focused, and built for people who need answers now, not next month.
Short answer. A new-product skin reaction is almost always down to one of five categories: a fragrance ingredient, a preservative, an essential oil, a surfactant, or - less often - a preservative-releasing chemical or specific active. This guide walks the same order a UK dermatology clinic would use to narrow the culprit down, without expensive tests, before deciding whether patch testing is the right next step.
Before you do anything else
Stop using the product. Wash off any residue with lukewarm water and pat dry. Take a photo of the reaction and note the date and time. Keep the product and any packaging - the ingredients list on the back is the single piece of evidence you cannot replace.
If the reaction is spreading fast, involves swelling around the eyes or lips, wheezing, or affects breathing, this is a possible immediate allergic reaction and needs urgent medical attention or, in the UK, 999.
Step 1 - work out the type of reaction
The pattern of the reaction tells you which mechanism is most likely, and that changes the culprit shortlist.
- Stung during use, calmed when washed off, no rash after - most likely irritant. Look at the strongest ingredients first: high-percentage actives (glycolic, salicylic, retinol), surfactants (SLS, some betaines), high alcohol content.
- Went red or blotchy within minutes, itched, faded within an hour or two - most likely contact urticaria. Look at fragrance, botanicals (chamomile, calendula), and specific proteins in cosmetics (hydrolysed wheat, oats).
- Fine at first, then itchy rash 12 to 72 hours later - most likely allergic contact dermatitis. This is the biggest and most confusing group. The culprit shortlist is fragrance, preservatives, essential oils, dyes, and specific reactive ingredients like MI or lanolin.
- Broke out in small spots or comedones after a few days - this is not usually allergic. It is more likely to be irritation or comedogenic response to an oil, wax or occlusive.
- Delayed rash only where sunlight hit the skin - a photocontact reaction. Some fragrance ingredients and some sunscreens can do this. Rare but worth knowing about.
Step 2 - read the INCI list with a shortlist in hand
Turn the product over. Read the ingredients in INCI format. Look for the following names, in this order:
Fragrance-related (the biggest single culprit group). Any of these means fragrance is present:
Parfum/Fragrance/Aroma.- Any of the 26 named fragrance allergens:
Limonene,Linalool,Citronellol,Geraniol,Citral,Coumarin,Eugenol,Cinnamal,Cinnamyl Alcohol,Farnesol,Hydroxycitronellal,Benzyl Alcohol,Benzyl Benzoate,Benzyl Salicylate,Amyl Cinnamal,Hexyl Cinnamal,Isoeugenol,Evernia Prunastri(oakmoss),Evernia Furfuracea(treemoss),Butylphenyl Methylpropional(lilial - now restricted), and others. - Essential oils - any INCI entry with a botanical Latin name followed by
OilorExtract. Lavender, tea tree, peppermint, citrus oils, ylang ylang, chamomile, rosemary. Natural, potent, and one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis.
Preservatives (the second biggest group).
Methylisothiazolinone(MI) andMethylchloroisothiazolinone(MCI) - one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in the UK. Banned in leave-on cosmetics since 2015 but still legal in rinse-off up to 15 ppm, and still causes reactions. See our preservatives hub for the full picture.- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives:
DMDM Hydantoin,Imidazolidinyl Urea,Diazolidinyl Urea,Quaternium-15,Bronopol,Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate,2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol. Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate(IPBC) - a preservative used in some baby wipes and rinse-offs, a rising cause of contact dermatitis.
Surfactants (mostly irritant, occasionally allergic).
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS) - the classic irritant. Not usually an allergen, but strong enough to damage the skin barrier and cause an irritant response, especially on already-reactive skin.Cocamidopropyl Betaine- a milder-looking surfactant that is actually one of the more common allergic causes in shampoos and washes.Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate,Sodium Coco-Sulfate- similar family, similar concerns.
Specific known sensitisers.
Lanolin(alsoLanolin Alcohol,Wool Alcohols) - a common cause of eyelid and lip dermatitis.Propylene Glycol- a solvent that can be both irritant and allergic.Colophonium/Colophony(pine rosin) - a hidden cause in some balms.- Hair dye ingredients:
p-Phenylenediamine(PPD) - the classic hair dye allergy. - Nail-related:
Toluenesulfonamide Formaldehyde Resin, some acrylates.
Actives (usually irritant, not allergic).
Glycolic Acid,Lactic Acid,Salicylic Acid,Retinol,Retinal,Ascorbic Acidin high concentrations. Reactions here are usually stinging or peeling rather than the classic delayed rash.
Step 3 - narrow it down using the pattern
Match your reaction pattern to the shortlist.
- Redness and stinging during use, no lasting rash: actives or SLS-family surfactants. The reaction usually stops when you stop using the product.
- Immediate hives, subsides within a couple of hours: fragrance, botanicals, or a specific allergen you have contact urticaria to.
- Delayed itchy rash on the eyelids, lips, or where the product sat longest: most likely fragrance, essential oils, MI/MCI, formaldehyde-releasers, or lanolin.
- Delayed rash on the scalp or hairline: think MI/MCI in shampoo, cocamidopropyl betaine, or hair-dye ingredients.
- Rash on the hands only: think the wash you used or the hand cream, not the last thing you rubbed on your face.
- Rash all over the trunk or arms: think a laundry-detergent change, a fabric softener, or a shower product used all over.
Step 4 - do the reset
- Simplify to a bare-minimum routine for two weeks: a fragrance-free non-soap wash, a fragrance-free short-INCI moisturiser, a mineral-only SPF if outdoors, and nothing else. No actives, no fragrance, no botanicals.
- Do not “test” other products during the reset. The skin needs quiet to recover before you can trust any new signal.
- Continue any prescribed treatment (steroid, protopic, calcineurin inhibitor) as prescribed. This is not the time to stop those.
If the reaction settles fully within two weeks on the reset, your baseline is now clean. You can reintroduce.
Step 5 - reintroduce one product at a time
- Bring back one product from your old routine every 3 to 4 days.
- Use it as you normally would; do not just spot-test.
- If a reaction reappears, you have your working suspect.
- If everything settles fine, the new product you originally reacted to is the most likely culprit, and the reset has now given you the ingredient shortlist to search for in the future.
Step 6 - if the culprit is still not clear
If the reset does not settle the skin, or the culprit is not obvious after reintroduction, it is worth escalating.
- Book a GP appointment. Ask about referral to dermatology for patch testing if the pattern of the rash and the timing fit allergic contact dermatitis.
- UK patch testing is done at a dermatology clinic over three appointments across a week. You bring a list of suspected products and a full skincare history.
- Keep a simple log for the two weeks before the appointment - what you used, when, and what your skin did. The log is often more useful than the appointment itself.
Two mistakes worth avoiding
- Blaming the newest product without checking. The newest product is a good first suspect, but not the only one. Any change - a laundry detergent switch, a new perfume worn by someone in your bed, a new sunscreen used only once - can be the real cause.
- Adding “soothing” botanicals. Chamomile, calendula, aloe, tea tree - all can themselves be sensitisers. When the skin is flaring, plain and simple beats “naturally soothing” almost every time.

Common questions
How long after using a product does a reaction usually appear?
It depends on the mechanism. Contact urticaria (immediate hives from contact) appears within minutes. Irritant contact dermatitis usually stings during use or within an hour. Allergic contact dermatitis is the slowest - the classic pattern is itch and rash appearing 12 to 72 hours after contact, which is why it is so often missed on the day you actually used the product.
Do I need to stop everything?
You need to stop the most likely culprit and simplify your routine to a bare-minimum plan for at least two weeks so the reaction can actually settle. Continuing every product 'except the new one' still leaves a lot of noise in the picture. A short reset gives you a clean baseline to reintroduce from.
Can I patch-test the product on myself at home?
Yes, once the current reaction has fully settled, and only for irritation-type reactions. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm twice a day for 5 days; if nothing happens, it is unlikely to be an irritant for you. Home tests cannot rule out a true allergic contact dermatitis - only a clinical patch test at dermatology can do that, and home testing an allergen you have already reacted to can provoke a bigger reaction.
Should I keep the product?
Yes, until you have worked out the cause. The full INCI ingredients list on the pack is the single most useful piece of evidence you have. Also keep the batch code (usually printed on the base of a bottle or the crimp of a tube) - it can matter if you later report to the brand or Trading Standards, especially if a whole batch turns out to have gone wrong.
