How to Store Skincare So It Stays Gentle
Heat, light and air can turn a gentle product into an irritating one. Here's how to store skincare so it stays kind to sensitive skin.
Why storage matters for sensitive skin
Some scent ingredients (linalool, citrus oils) become more likely to cause a reaction once they oxidise, which is why a product that was fine for months can start to sting. Good storage slows that down.
The method
- Keep it cool and dark, away from sunny windowsills and steamy bathroom shelves.
- Close lids firmly to limit air exposure.
- Prefer pumps and tubes over open tubs, which let in air and fingers.
- Watch the period-after-opening symbol (the little open-jar icon with “12M”, “6M” and so on) and don’t push products well past it.
If an old favourite turns on you
If something you have used for ages suddenly irritates, oxidation is a likely cause. A quick check of your triggers with ClearaScan can rule out a formulation change too, and it keeps a Reaction Journal, a shared Care Circle so others can scan for you, and a Trusted Products list. (We co-founded ClearaScan and are not paid to mention it.)
A note on this content. The Sensitive Skin Lab publishes general educational information, not medical advice. If you suspect you have an allergy or sensitivity, consult a qualified dermatologist or allergist. Product formulations and labels change without notice, so always check the ingredients on the product itself.
