Eugenol: The Clove-Scented Fragrance Allergen on Your Label
Eugenol gives products a warm, clove-like note and is one of the named EU fragrance allergens. What it is, the UK and EU rules, who reacts, and where to spot it, in plain UK English.
What it is
Eugenol is a naturally occurring scent compound best known for the warm, sweet, clove-like smell it gives to spicy and oriental fragrances. Chemically it is a phenylpropanoid, a relative of the terpene family that supplies so many everyday fragrance materials. It is found in clove, cinnamon leaf, nutmeg, basil and bay, and it can also be manufactured synthetically for the fragrance and flavour industries.
Because it is plant-derived as well as made in the lab, eugenol turns up in a very wide range of products, from fine perfumery and aromatherapy blends to botanical skincare that markets itself as natural. That natural image can be misleading for someone with reactive skin, because the plant origin has no bearing on how likely eugenol is to cause an allergic reaction.
Why it is used
Eugenol is used first and foremost for its scent. It provides the recognisable clove-and-spice warmth at the heart of many perfumes, aftershaves and warm-scented cosmetics, and it blends and rounds out other fragrance notes, so perfumers value it as a building block. It is also used as a flavouring, which is why it appears in some toothpastes, mouthwashes and clove-flavoured products.
On top of its scent and flavour roles, eugenol has mild antibacterial and analgesic properties. This is the reason it has a long history in dentistry, where clove oil and eugenol-based cements have been used for their gentle numbing and antiseptic effect. In skincare, though, its presence is essentially about fragrance, so wherever you see it named on a cosmetic you are looking at a scented product.
The UK and EU rules
Eugenol is one of the fragrance allergens that UK and EU cosmetics rules require to be named individually on the ingredient list once it is present above a set level, currently 0.001 per cent in leave-on products and 0.01 per cent in rinse-off products, rather than being hidden inside the catch-all word parfum. Historically this applied to a defined list of 26 named fragrance allergens, of which eugenol is one, and the list has been expanded under newer EU rules to cover further substances.
That is why you will sometimes see the word Eugenol spelled out toward the end of an ingredient list even when the product simply says Fragrance or Parfum higher up. The naming rule exists precisely because these ingredients are recognised triggers of fragrance allergy, and seeing the name lets a sensitive person screen for it. It is a good example of the labelling system working in the consumer’s favour, turning an otherwise anonymous fragrance component into something you can actually check for.
Who reacts and why
Eugenol is a well-documented cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and it is included in the fragrance mix used in dermatology patch testing precisely because it catches so many fragrance-allergic people. The reaction is the delayed, immune-driven type, appearing a day or two after contact as redness, itching or small bumps where the product touched, rather than an instant sting. This is contact allergy rather than simple irritation, and once someone is sensitised it tends to persist.
The people most likely to react are those with existing fragrance sensitivity, eczema, or a history of contact dermatitis, because a compromised skin barrier lets more of the allergen through. Like other fragrance terpenes, eugenol can oxidise once a product has been open a while, and the aged form tends to be more sensitising. It is also a known co-reactor with other spicy-note ingredients such as isoeugenol and cinnamal, so someone who reacts to eugenol may find that warm, spicy scents in general are a problem. A dermatologist’s patch test is the reliable way to confirm the trigger.
How to spot it on a label
On a cosmetics label, look for Eugenol, usually near the end of the ingredient list alongside the other named fragrance allergens such as Isoeugenol, Cinnamal, Limonene and Linalool. It may occasionally appear under a chemical name such as 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol, or the older term eugenic acid. Because it is declared separately from parfum, its presence is a clear sign that a product is fragranced, whatever the front of the pack claims.
The product categories to check are warm and spicy perfumes, aftershaves, aromatherapy blends and botanical skincare, plus some toothpastes, mouthwashes and clove-flavoured or clove-containing products, and household items such as candles and room fragrance. Remember that unscented is not the same as fragrance-free, so an unscented product can still contain eugenol as part of a masking fragrance. Fragrance-free, checked against the full ingredient list, is the safest wording.
A balanced take
Eugenol is not a dangerous chemical for most people, and there is no need to treat a clove-scented product as hazardous. Plenty of people enjoy warm, spicy fragrances with no trouble at all. The honest picture is simply that eugenol is one of the recognised fragrance allergens, common enough to earn its place in the standard patch-test mix, and that its natural, spice-drawer associations can wrongly reassure a sensitive person. As with the other named allergens, the aim is proportion rather than fear. If eugenol has never bothered you, there is no reason to avoid it. If warm, spicy or clove-scented products reliably flare your skin, it is one of the first names to look for and screen out.
What to do if avoiding it
If eugenol is a trigger, the most protective habit is to choose fragrance-free products over natural, unscented or botanical ones, and to read the full ingredient list to the end, where the named allergens sit. Screen for eugenol alongside its close relatives isoeugenol and cinnamal, since these spicy notes often go together. Mention a known eugenol allergy to your dentist, because clove-based dental products can be a hidden source. Use scented products up within a sensible time to limit oxidation, and patch test anything new on a small area first. Is eugenol natural or synthetic?
Both. It occurs naturally in clove, cinnamon leaf, nutmeg, basil and bay, and it is also made synthetically. Natural sourcing does not make it any less likely to trigger a reaction in a sensitive person.
